In Alaska, Sarah Palin loses a test ballot before the midterm elections

The former candidate for the vice-presidency of the United States, the Republican Sarah Palin, who dreamed of returning to politics, was defeated on Wednesday in a by-election in Alaska, despite the support of Donald Trump. This ballot served as a test before the "midterms" of November 8.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin lost a by-election on Wednesday (August 31) for that state's only seat in the United States House of Representatives .

Sarah Palin , 58, had hoped to make a political comeback by running for the seat that had been vacant since the sudden death of Republican Don Young, who had held it for forty-nine years.

Despite backing from former President Donald Trump , she lost to Democrat Mary Peltola, who will represent Alaska until Nov. 8 — when all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be returned. Thu. Sarah Palin will be able to present herself again on this occasion.

Populist turn

This Christian conservative has played a key role in the populist turn of the Republican Party over the past ten years, intended to wrest the votes of the popular white electorate from the Democrats, the party of current President Joe Biden.

She suddenly found herself in the spotlight when she was chosen by Republican presidential candidate John McCain as his running mate in the 2008 election. Her rise, many observers say, paved the way Donald Trump's rise to the White House, which he won eight years later.

Sarah Palin said she supported the New York billionaire from the start of her campaign in 2016, because he had supported her before. Donald Trump is trying to consolidate his hold on the Republican Party by supporting, in the primaries, the candidates who are favorable to him against those of the more moderate Republican right, with mixed success so far.

During the midterm elections, the Americans will also renew a third of the United States Senate and around thirty governorships.
