After the passage of Hurricane Ian in Florida (United States), the damage is considerable, Thursday, September 29. Some have seen their homes and savings swept away by winds and floods.
At the entrance to Fort Myers (Florida, United States), Thursday, September 29, is, on the road, a boat deposited by extreme winds and submersive waves. The city was one of the hardest hit areas by Hurricane Ian . The marina is completely devastated. A yacht was literally transported tens of meters on dry land by the violence of the elements. Another man lived on his boat. All that remains of this boat is a t-shirt with a photo of the ship printed on it.
Homes that are not insured
From affluent neighborhoods to popular housing estates, many residents had fortunately listened to evacuation instructions. A family has spent the night in a shelter, and comes to see the damage: it's a lifetime of savings and investments carried away. In another neighborhood, neighbors help each other. " The reconstruction will take weeks, and for a good number of residents here in Florida, it will be necessary to start from scratch, because as often in the United States, many of these houses are not insured ", concludes the journalist Loïc de la Mornais, special envoy to Fort Myers.
Our hearts go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Ian's catastrophic damage. We know this is a challenging time, and the American Red Cross is working around the clock with our partners to offer support and comfort to people in need.
Wednesday night, more than 33,000 people sought refuge in approximately 260 evacuation shelters across Florida to escape Hurricane Ian. The number of people seeking shelter could increase in the coming days as power outages continue and people leave homes that are too damaged to stay in.
It will be days before the full scope of the damage that Ian left behind is revealed, and the danger isn’t over. Ian is still battering Florida with strong winds and heavy rains, and in the coming days the storm will threaten states as far north as Virginia with even more flooding. Ian will make a second landfall Friday and the entire coast of South Carolina is under a hurricane warning. As the storm heads north, the Red Cross is working with partners and local officials in several states to be ready to help where needed.
This storm, along with the earlier wildfires out west and storms in Puerto Rico and Alaska, are clear examples of the increasing frequency and intensity of climate disasters. Year after year, the Red Cross is supporting families who are struggling to cope. During 2020 and 2021 alone, we averaged a new, major disaster response every 10 days with Red Cross volunteers continuously on the ground, setting up shelters, arranging for hot meals and sheltering thousands of people with no place else to go.
