Remains of prehistoric ceramics allow us to know how cooking was done 4,000 years ago in an ancient civilization

They have found a surprising continuity in "ways of eating" over 1,300 years. They acquired ingredients in various ways: "Gathering in the wild, farming, and trading from elsewhere."

Remains of prehistoric pottery have allowed a team of researchers from the CSIC and the Pompeu Fabra University to analyze traces of ingredients in kitchen containers that are more than 4,000 years old and discover how cooking was done in an ancient civilization .

Scientists from the Milà i Fontanals Humanities Research Institution of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (IMF-CSIC) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) have analyzed the remains of 28 containers that were used for cooking between 5,300 and 4,000 years ago, in India .

The first author of this study is Juan José García-Granero, from IMF-CSIC, who leads the work together with researcher Akshyeta Suryanarayan, from UPF, and Marco Madella, ICREA researcher at UPF.

They have examined animal lipids and microscopic plant remains in vessels from the Bronze Age of the Indus Valley Civilization and older in northern Gujarat, India, and by reconstructing the ancient ingredients, their diverse origin and ways of preparation, They have found a surprising continuity in "ways of eating" for 1,300 years , in which at the same time there has been a great cultural change.
