Why the United States will release 2 billion genetically modified mosquitoes

With half a million victims each year, the mosquito is the deadliest species for humans. Genetically modifying mosquitoes could then be a solution.

Release two billion mosquitoes into the wild to reduce their population: a not-so-outlandish idea from an American company. For several years now, companies have been trying new ways to reduce the mosquito population , other than insecticides and the drying up of wetlands.

American companies, such as Google, or the British company Oxitec have already released GMO mosquitoes in recent years. Seeing that this has made it possible to limit their population, the British Oxitec decided to go from a release of 750 million to two billion mosquitoes.

These mosquitoes are only males of the Aedes aegypti species, named OX5034 by scientists. The goal is for them to breed with females, which will give birth to non-viable larvae . These larvae will all die before adulthood, prevented by the genes of the male from producing a protein necessary for their development.

United States: a truck full of vibrators blocks the highway

The accident happened in broad daylight in the United States. A truck full of vibrators overturned and blocked a highway. These images have made the rounds of social networks and American media. On Wednesday, September 14, a traffic accident took place in the United States on a highway. A truck overturned on its side, leaving much of its cargo toppling over.
