Donald Trump sued by New York Attorney General for tax evasion

The New York State Attorney General has announced that she is suing former US President Donald Trump in a civil tax evasion investigation. 


Last August, Donald Trump remained silent in front of the teams of the Attorney General of the State of New York, during six hours of hearing. But that didn't deter prosecutor Letitia James, who vowed to pursue facts and law enforcement "wherever it leads" in an investigation into financial fraud at the Trump Organization. . This Wednesday, as reported by AFP, Letitia James announced that she is suing the former American president and three of his children, Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump.

$250 million in repairs requested

During a press conference, Letitia James announced:  “We are taking legal action against Donald Trump for breaking the law (…) in order to generate profits for himself, his family and his business.  The Attorney General is seeking $250 million in reparations on behalf of New York State, and also asking that Donald Trump and his children be banned from running corporations.

Trump calls himself victim of 'new witch hunt'

In response, Donald Trump lamented being the victim of a  “  new witch hunt ,” he wrote on his Truth Social network . He also accused Letitia James of political prosecution: “  I never thought this case would come to court - until I saw her very poor polls. »

Donald Trump has been targeted by this investigation for tax evasion since 2019. The file was opened after the explosive testimony of Michael Cohen, one of Donald Trump's former personal lawyers, to Congress in Washington. He had pointed to fraudulent assessments, upwards or downwards, of assets within the Trump Organization in order to obtain loans, more interesting insurance compensation or even tax reductions.

Last August, Donald Trump had already been heard by Letitia James and her team in this case. But the billionaire had chosen to remain silent. In a press release, he said he was the victim, he and his entourage, of a "witch hunt  ",  having therefore pushed him not to answer questions. "When your family, your business and everyone around you have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated witch hunt, backed by lawyers, prosecutors and the fake news media, you have no choice. “ , he had lamented in this press release which AFP echoed.

These lawsuits for tax evasion come as Donald Trump is already the subject of other ongoing investigations. One of them is investigating the presidential archives of the former head of state , whose luxurious Mar-a-Lago property in Florida was raided on August 8 by the FBI.
