A male contraceptive pill 99% effective in mice

American scientists claim to have developed a male contraceptive pill that is 99% effective in mice, without side effects , and which could be tested on humans by the end of the year.

These findings, released at the American Chemical Society's Spring Meeting , mark a key milestone in efforts to expand contraceptive options for men and better share the burden of birth control with women.

While the latter have a large number of options to control their menstrual cycle, only two effective options have been proposed so far in terms of male contraception : the condom or the vasectomy.

But condoms are single-use only, and vasectomies aren't easy to reverse. Researchers therefore worked to develop an effective , long-lasting and reversible male contraceptive, similar to the birth control pill for women.

" Scientists have been trying for decades to develop an effective male oral contraceptive, but there is still no approved pill on the market ," said Md Abdullah Al Noman, a graduate student who presented the work at the meeting.

Most of the compounds currently in clinical trials target the male sex hormone - testosterone - which can lead to side effects such as weight gain, depression and increased cholesterol levels.

" We wanted to develop a non-hormonal male contraceptive to avoid these side effects ," said Abdullah Al Noman, who works in Professor Gunda Georg's lab at the University of Minnesota.
