Lisa Cook becomes the first black governor of the American Central Bank

His nomination was met with strong opposition from Republicans. She finally obtained a very narrow majority thanks to the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.

She is the first black woman to hold this position. The US Senate confirmed, Tuesday, May 10, the appointment of economist Lisa Cook as governor of the Fed, the US central bank (Fed), despite the opposition of elected Republicans. Senators voted 51 to 50 in favor of the nominee chosen by US President Joe Biden . It was Vice President Kamala Harris's vote that secured a majority.

His appointment had been met with strong opposition. The leader of the Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, had even criticized Lisa Cook for having “pushed conspiracy theories” around racism and the police. His appointment comes as the US central bank must fight against high inflation, without weighing on economic growth and employment.

Economic adviser to the White House during the Obama era, Lisa Cook grew up in the South of the United States. “My beliefs were shaped by growing up in Milledgeville, Georgia ,” she explained in February. His work as an economist focuses on the damage caused by discrimination and the consequences of economic downturns for poor people. She speaks five languages, including French and Russian.
